Easiest way to download JWST raw image data
In this post we are going to learn how to download specific raw image files of a celestial object which was taken by JWST (James Webb Space Telescope). It is easier to just download any image from the NASA or any other website but if you need to image process the raw data by your self, you need to download the raw image data of the JWST or any other mission from a database. MAST portal is one of the best image database you can find in the internet.
First thing you need to do is to search the keyword "mast portal" in the browser search.
Then click the first link in the search results as shown below. Then you will see the MAST portal website in the browser window.
It will take some time to load the all the data from all the missions available. Then you have to choose the mission from the mission tab. In the mission tab we cannot see the whole available missions in database. So we need to click "Show 7 more" link to show all the missions available. Then choose and tic "JWST" as the mission.
Following image shows how to select the required search results. First you need to identify the instrument that was used to take the photos. In here we only choose NIRCAM images from the list.
Then press the Floppy Disk icon which situated in front of the each file to download the required image data files. Make sure to download the images of all the available filters. In here we have 6 image files from different filters and configurations.
In a future post we will going to talk about how to process the images that we have downloaded and how to create a beautiful image by yourself using only these raw image files. Also we are going to learn about the different filters of JWST instrumentation in a future post.
